We believe custody is still to reach its full potential in the digital asset market. In the first phase of digital asset custodian development (2014–2019), such businesses were characterized by;

• Storage-centric technology solutions
• Premium basis points revenue models
• Regulatory and insurance attitudes that reflected traditional custodian businesses

This resulted in largely similar-looking products and services shaped by existing regulatory expectations and evolving insurance-driven security frameworks. The reality is that most of these custodians focused on the wrong problem — storage — and assumed that safeguarding and administering assets in the digital asset space should operate similarly to those custodians in the traditional financial institutions space. However, our view is different;

• Custody is not about storage. Storing asset keys is not a difficult technical challenge nor an expensive problem to solve
• Custody is currently too expensive for the value it provides. High fees for parking assets disincentivizes customers to use the service, especially as there is not enough insurance capacity to cover 100% of all currently custodied assets globally
• Part of the “safeguarding and administering of assets” is already managed by the network (or “cryptobank”) itself
• Clients have no central venue to deploy custodied assets and generate yield

So, at CDG we have worked hard in the last 18 months to realign how custody should serve the digital asset market. We know the digital asset universe is expanding and we want to offer our customers the ability to access this universe and create wealth, not just protect it.

Customers should be offered a service that solves these problems and we want to offer an alternative venue to exchanges for customers considering their digital asset portfolio needs.

Custody at CDG focuses on governance, risk and controls; the ability for customers to deploy and manage, on a per asset basis, increasingly complex portfolios whilst all the time meeting internal and external reporting requirements. We will not overcharge you for storing assets with us. We will offer you opportunities to generate yield. We will embed custody into the fabric of the ecosystem and, in doing so, reimagine how custody serves you.
